US Attorney General Eric Holder and US Senator Carl Levin honored by Focus: HOPE

U.S. Attorney General Eric H. Holder, Jr. and U.S. Senator Carl Levin received Focus: HOPE’s inaugural “Heroes for Hope” award at a gala fundraiser on Friday, June 13, 2014. Stephen Henderson, Detroit Free Press editorial page editor and 2014 Pulitzer Prize winner, served as master of ceremonies.

Attorney General Holder and Sen. Levin were recognized as true heroes in the battle to overcome racism, poverty and injustice. Their humanitarian efforts reflect Focus: HOPE’s mission and the lives and values of the organization’s late co-founders, Father William Cunningham and Eleanor Josaitis.

“Our 2014 ‘Heroes for Hope’ award recipients have been on the forefront in the struggle for racial, social and economic equality,” said Focus: HOPE CEO William F. Jones, Jr. “They have fought to improve the lives of the disadvantaged and underserved. For that reason, we are honoring Attorney General Holder and Sen. Levin at our first annual event recognizing social justice heroes who are making a difference in our community and nation.”

The black tie gala took place from 6:00 p.m. until midnight in the Grand Riverview Ballroom inside the newly-renovated Cobo Center in downtown Detroit. The evening featured a formal dinner, desserts, dancing and live entertainment. Proceeds from the “Heroes for Hope” event will be used to continue the social justice initiatives at Focus: HOPE. Hundreds of thousands of individuals and families have benefited from the social services, job training and education programs offered by the non-profit organization.

Substantial support for the “Heroes for Hope” event was provided by these major sponsors: Bank of America, Detroit Media Partnership, Ford Motor Company Fund, JPMorgan Chase, Lear Corporation, and Winston & Strawn LLP.
